Solar panels still generate electricity under clouds, but output drops. Nigerian studies show why proper sizing and batteries matter.
Does Solar Work When It's Cloudy? Here's What the Numbers Say
There is a common assumption that solar panels are useful only when the sky is clear. That isn't how photovoltaic systems work. Panels can still generate electricity under cloudy conditions because sunlight continues to reach the ground, although clouds can reduce the amount of solar radiation available to the panels and, in turn, reduce their output.
How much that output falls depends heavily on where you are in Nigeria. A 2025 study by researchers from the University of Vermont and Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University used 12 years of climatic data, including solar irradiation, cloud cover, temperature and humidity, to model solar PV generation across Nigeria's different climatic regions. The study found the highest solar potential in the North, where hot and relatively dry conditions are accompanied by less cloud cover. The Southern region, with more humidity and frequent cloud cover, showed lower predicted PV output.
A separate study published in December 2025 examined the relationship between direct normal irradiance and total cloud cover across Nigeria using satellite and reanalysis data. The researchers found a clear relationship between the amount of cloud cover and the direct solar radiation reaching different parts of the country. That matters because direct sunlight is a major component of the solar resource available to photovoltaic systems.
The difference between northern and southern Nigeria doesn't mean solar is unsuitable in the South. It means the same solar system cannot be expected to perform identically everywhere. A household in Sokoto and one in Rivers State can install panels with the same rated capacity and see different energy yields because the amount of sunlight available to those panels changes with local weather conditions.
Cloud cover also changes throughout the year. The 2025 Nigerian PV forecasting study found that the Western region, including Lagos, experiences a marked difference between its wet and dry seasons, with increased cloud cover during the rainy season affecting solar availability. In the South and East, frequent rainfall and cloud cover similarly reduce the amount of direct solar radiation reaching the panels.
This is why solar systems are not designed around the assumption that every day will look like the clearest day of the year. The expected solar resource at the location matters when determining how much generation is required, while battery capacity becomes important when the panels cannot produce enough during periods of poor weather.
So, yes, solar works when it is cloudy. What changes is how much electricity the system can produce. For a homeowner, the useful question is whether the proposed system has been designed around the actual weather conditions at the property, including the periods when sunlight is less available, not simply whether clouds will stop the panels from working.
